The history of Aldourie Castle Estate is truly spectacular. First recorded as a laird’s house – a mansion – in 1626, Aldourie Castle is a classic example of Scottish Baronial architecture and an authentic historic Castle, having achieved that status in the C19th. This property has evolved, both physically and in its use, over a period of around 220 years.
Now one of the most beautifully presented private hire properties in Scotland, Aldourie Castle underwent a substantial renovation in recent years and its sympathetic restoration was careful to maintain the character of Aldourie with attention to detail applied to every room.
The thorough refurbishment was necessary to create a place worthy of luxury holidays and with the requirements of a private house party of today.
Aldourie Castle Estate is situated on Strath Dores, between the southern shores of famous Loch Ness and the steep sides of the Glen leading onto Drumashie Moor. It has become interwoven with Scotland’s interesting and diverse history and has welcomed some impressive characters throughout the years.
Aldourie witnessed the passing of General Wade’s troops, was a meeting place for the Lovat Scouts, played an important part in the life of the famous artist GF Watts and acted as the perfect stop off for Victorian aristocrats who followed the royal family north to the Highlands.
Aldourie Castle has a wild and mysterious feel to it that is no doubt a result of its unique heritage; many a rebellious Highland clan passed through the Aldourie Estate to battle over land and the original building was built and lived in by a Mackintosh of Kyllachy.
The 19th Century property, is now classed as the only habitual Castle on Loch Ness and is the reminiscent of its original grandeur and beauty.
